Hi, ASL? 9 Things From The 00’s That we Forgot About In Malta

With instant communication at the tip of our fingers, it’s easy to forget just how far the world has come from the humble telephone.

And while the 2000s might seem like ancient history for some, those who remember know that it was just the start of our communication transformation.

Whether it’s not being able to send a quick message letting people know you’re running late (those suckers just had to wait) or rummaging through directories to make sure you’ve got the correct Mario Borg, the way we communicate has changed so much.

So get ready to unlock some of those memories (and in some cases traumas) of what it was like communicating way back in 2001.

1. Hi, ASL?

If that phrase doesn’t remind you of every conversation starter, then you’re way too young to remember the way we chatted in the Millenium. Back in the dial-up internet age, chatrooms littered with cringe-worthy usernames and the very beginnings of internet speak were the norm. For those who don’t know, it stands for age, sex, location. In hindsight giving out personal information to anyone who asked seems a bit crazy!

2. Encarta

Dubbed as the OG Google, Encarta was the digital version of the massive encyclopedia collection that was in everyone’s home. The pioneer of online search, you didn’t need to flip through dusty old pages to find information on anything anymore.

3. Is it 6pm, yet?

For dial-up internet users, it was a rule in almost every household that you can only use the internet after 6pm. Why? Because the dial-up tariffs would be cheaper once the clock strikes six.

Fun Fact: Did you know that Melita was the first to offer 24/7 internet without the dial-up in Malta?

4.  The first emails were @onvol

Snail mail and faxes were soon phased out in favour of email. Onvol was the pioneer in providing email access to everyone in Malta.

Do you remember your dad’s [email protected] account? And does he still use it?

Our friends at Melita confirmed that there are currently 5,000+ still active accounts.

5. That grey phone

The famed curly-wired phone was the only phone in any given household for some time, so you can forget about calling your friend after school if your mum is on the phone with your nanna.

This phone did not have a contact list so was strategically placed near the telephone directory. Never mind looking for that Mario Borg, did you get the right one?

6. Hello, 190!

Googling a restaurant’s phone number was something you wouldn’t even dream of back then. The way to get numbers was to call up enquiries on 190, ask them for a number, jot it down, and then call up the establishment to make your booking.

“I need the number for Manhattan Ta’ Xbiex, please!”

7. Using telecards

Since mobile phones were not a thing yet, everyone had a payphone telecard on them at all times. How else were you supposed to call up your parents to let them know when to pick you up? Coming in different tariffs, do you remember what colour your telecard was?

8. Burning CDs

Long before Spotify playlists, Millenials used to burn CDs. The lengthy process included downloading your favourite tunes from Napster or LimeWire and then transfering them to Nero. If you were lucky you’d be able to squeeze in 10 tracks to listen to on a loop.

Hello, revision of piracy laws!

9. Checking the newspaper for the TV guide

Back in the era of television and adverts, we didn’t have TV on demand. We used to have to wait a week or more to watch the next episode of the most popular shows. Every channel’s broadcasting schedule was listed in the newspaper. You would have to check there that your favourite show was still airing as planned.

Who remembers Clooney as Dr. Doug Ross?

Fast forward to 2022

We’re closer to 2030 than we are to the year 2000, and the world of communication has been transformed beyond what we could have ever imagined back then. Everything can be done from your smartphone, so having a mobile plan which lets you fully enjoy your phone is super important.

That’s why Melita has come up with the All in⁺ plan. Offering you better connections and bigger savings, you don’t need to worry about using the internet after 6pm because you’ll have endless 5G mobile data.

Choose the phone plan that works best for you, then cut costs by being one big happy family! Up to five people can be on one contract and with the All inplans, the more people, the bigger the savings – up to €70 a month!

Starting from €23.99, the more plans you add to your contract, the cheaper that plan will be. So your partner can benefit from a €20.99 contract and your children and even nanniet can get a plan for only €15.99 monthly.

The price drops but the benefits don’t! The more mobile plans added to All In⁺, the lower the price, but everyone gets the same benefits!

Even if you’re one of those people who spends more time abroad than in Malta, Melita has the option for you. With their JetSet add-on, you can get 1GB of mobile data in almost 60 countries, plus unlimited calls, SMS, and data in the EU, UK, USA, Australia, Canada, and even China.

Feeling a bit overwhelmed? Don’t worry, if you head on over to the All in, the website will help you create what plan will work wonders for you and break down the cost and savings of everything.

There are no surprises when it comes to Melita because the Endless Essential plan combined with a home-fixed internet plan will keep you connected 24/7.

Letting you keep your own number when making the switch, everything is easy with Melita. You have eyes on what your plan is and how much you’re paying, so you’re in total control.
