One Of Malta’s Favourite Restaurants Just Got A Menu Revamp And We’re Still Salivating
The seaside town of Qawra is practically synonymous with summer here in Malta. A go-to destination for tourists visiting the island, loads of great places to eat for all the family, and plenty of spots to catch some rays or take a dip in the sea.
Nested among the various eateries is Tal-Kaptan, a staple of family dinners and great nights out. But the restaurant’s latest menu makeover has elevated the Tal-Kaptan dining experience to way above an average ‘family restaurant’.
From poached egg and apple salads to guanciale pizza, the new menu has something for everyone
Expertly selected and prepared by Chef Justin, each dish is crafted to perfection in order to get the most impact from every ingredient. Some members of Team Lovin were invited down to Tal-Kaptan to try some dishes from the new menu. And boy were we spoilt for choice.
Our starters included the Truffle Bon-Bons and Bloody Mary Gambas
The bon-bons were basically tiny arancini filled with gooey cheese and pieces of truffles, and are a great vegetarian option. The gambas gave us a sort of ‘deconstructed Bloody Mary’ vibe, in the form of sesame-crusted prawns served with a spicy tomato sauce and celery dressing.
We also got to sample the Lamb Bao Buns. Soft, taco-shaped bao bun pastry filled with pulled lamb, plum sauce and bell peppers, a delicate balance of savoury sweetness that will make you wish you had ordered a double portion.
Another great vegetarian option to start with is their truffle and cheese pizza rollo. It’s basically the pizza version of the truffle bon-bons and is great for sharing (but we totally won’t judge you if you eat it alone).
The mains range from pizza and fresh pasta, to fish and meat dishes, and the menu includes a Chef’s Specials section that Chef Justin updates to best fit the season
We picked out a 300gr Angus beef fillet that cut like butter and was served with a variety of roast veggies, crispy onion rings and coriander-smoked potatoes. Other meat options on the menu include an Angus steak, 1kg beef tagliata, and confit pork belly.
For the non meat-eaters out there, a variety of vegetarian and vegan options are also available. We tried their vegan home-made ravioli made from asparagus, with sesame seeds and a coconut-beetroot sauce.
And if you’re looking to indulge in something a bit less typical than to your usual go-to order, the pan-fried duck is a great meat option that adds a bit of variance compared to your average steak. Paired with an orange and brandy gravy, and accompanied by veggies and potatoes, this is quite a dreamy dish.
And of course, there’s no way we’d have skipped dessert
A variety of cakes is always on offer at Tal-Kaptan, but a recent addition that hasn’t even made it to the menu yet is their Nutella Pizza. A plain sourdough pizza base, drizzled with Nutella and topped with chopped hazelnuts. You can literally cut yourself a slice of heaven.
