Pulitzer-Winning ‘How I Learned To Drive’ Debuts In Malta At Theatre Next Door

A Pulitzer Prize-winning play that shook the world of theatre is now making its Maltese-language debut. Produced by Dù Theatre and translated to Maltese by Simone Spiteri, Paula Vogel’s How I Learned to Drive, ‘Kif Tgħallimt Insuq’, comes to Theatre Next Door, a story of power, control and the devastating effects of abuse.
A landmark in contemporary theatre, Vogel’s play is a gripping and darkly poetic exploration of grooming, manipulation and family complicity. Beneath its sharp wit and nuanced storytelling lies an unflinching portrayal of pedophilia, abuse and the long-term psychological impact on survivors. Now, more than twenty-five years after its American debut, the themes remain as urgent and relevant as ever.

Directed by Chiara Hyzler, this production follows Iż-Żgħira, a young girl whose world is shaped by a complex and troubling relationship with her driving instructor. As she recounts her journey with raw vulnerability and unsettling sincerity, the lines between care and control, affection and manipulation, begin to blur.
‘Kif Tgħallimt Insuq’ forces audiences to confront difficult truths delivered with masterful storytelling, biting humour and an unapologetic candour that is unique to the Maltese language.
Bringing this bold and necessary piece to life is an exceptional cast featuring Simone Spiteri, Peter Galea, Moira Vassallo, Pierre Stafrace, Maria Buckle, Magdalena Van Kuilenburg and Adam Ryan.

Kif Tgħallimt Insuq is being staged at Theatre Next Door on 28th February till Sunday 2nd March and from Friday 7th March till Sunday 9th March with an extra show added on Friday 14th March. Shows on the 1st, 8th and 14th March will also include English subtitles.
