The Beach Bums

1. Cagliari, Sardinia, Italy (Air Malta)

Think Malta… just 97 times larger.

Cagliari is an ancient city with a long history, but with those endless beaches and that glorious Mediterranean climate, you’ll be glued to the seaside.

2. Nice, France (Volotea)

Is there anywhere as fabulous as the French Riviera?

One of the most iconic cities in the world thanks to all the times it’s been featured in films, Nice is equal parts beautiful French seaside city and Mediterranean LA.

It’s not too rare to spot a holidaying A-list celebrity or some of the rarest cars in the world over here, but it’s really all about that picture-perfect, endless beach.

3. Porto, Portugal (Ryanair)

It’s a city that’s literally named after the word ‘port’. What did you expect?

Whether it’s the Duoro River or the actual Atlantic ocean, you’re never too far from a body of water in Porto, and the city boasts some of the most beautiful beaches in all of Iberia.

With enough praias (that’s beaches) for everyone, the second largest city in Portugal is perfect if you want to get your tan on while catching some gorgeous ocean views.

The Party Animals

4. Málaga, Spain (Air Malta)

It’s the southernmost large city of Europe, and it also happens to be one of the oldest in the world. But you don’t care about all that and Málaga doesn’t mind that at all.

The Costa del Sol is amazing to look at in the Spanish sun, but it gets even better once the sun sets and the parties start. And when they do, there’s no stopping them until the early hours of the morning.

5. Gothenburg, Sweden (Ryanair)

The fifth largest Nordic city, Gothenburg is one of the party capitals of the north.

Whether it’s impromptu free live music in the streets or a bustling nightlife, Gothenburg is a city that doesn’t really sleep. Some of the largest annual events in all of Scandinavia all happen here, from the Gothenburg Film Festival to music festivals like Way Out West and Metaltown.

6. Lisbon, Portugal (Air Malta)

Capital cities are nearly always filled to the brim with activity, but there’s just something about Lisbon that really stands out.

A beautiful mix of food, culture, history and customs, Lisbon is equal parts Mediterranean and exotic, and that really shines bright in its nightlife.

The Portuguese capital hosts an endless list of music festivals and events, satisfying everyone from the seasoned rockers to the restless clubbers. This is definitely the place to be if you hate wasting your holiday by sleeping.

The City Slickers

7. St. Petersburg, Russia (Air Malta)

They say everything is bigger and more grand in Russia, and Saint Petersburg is clear proof of that.

Second in size only to Moscow, the western Russian city is a perfect introduction to a country with a surface area that is literally larger than the moon.

If you live for the city life, you’ll know that there’s urban lifestyle, then there’s St. Petersburg.

8. Bilbao, Spain (Volotea)

Bilbao has been going through an immense development explosion which is quickly making it one of the busiest centres in Spain. It’s also home to Athletic Club de Bilbao, one of the most successful clubs in Spanish football history.

In other words, this is the perfect place to be if you want to feel like you’re constantly in the heart of it all.

9. Paris Beauvais, France (Ryanair)

Love, cheese and wine are only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to France’s capital.

One of the most happening cities in Europe, Paris is as much a shopping centre as it is a cultural, historic, artistic and foodie hub.

Step out of Beauvais airport, catch a quick one-and-a-half-hour coach to the centre, and whether you go east to Euro Disney or west to under the Eiffel Tower, get ready to take it all in. The city beckons, and she’s ready to offer you everything.

The Foodies

10. Casablanca, Morocco (Air Malta)

With a bit of the Atlantic and a whole lot of spices, this central-western city in Morocco is one of the largest and most important cities in Africa. If you love experimenting with different tastes, Casablanca is one delicious melting pot of Mediterranean and African cuisine.

And if you’re up for a little adventure, why not hop on over to Marrakesh? Just under 3 hours away by car, Marrakesh is a veritable goldmine, with a history stretching back to the Neolithic period, enough to satisfy any googly-eyed tourist and history buff.

11. Bratislava, Slovakia (Ryanair)

Austrians, Bulgarians, Croats, Czechs, Germans, Hungarians, Jews, Serbs and Slovaks all had their own say and influence over Bratislava in the past, and you know what that means? Lots and lots of different cultures (read: cuisines).

Slovakian cuisine might gravitate around potatoes and pancakes, but Bratislava has recently erupted into an experimental bomb of fruity delights and over-the-top desserts.

12. Pescara, Italy (Ryanair)

If that name kind of sounds like the Italian word for fish, there’s a very valid reason. In 1095, Pescara was a fishing village with a name that literally meant “abounding with fish”.

In other words, think a much larger Marsaxlokk, with a population roughly the size of all of Malta.

The Explorers

13. Aberdeen, Scotland (Ryanair)

Way up in the north of Britain lies this absolute gem waiting to be discovered.

Long sandy coastlines, chilly summers and countless castles await any adventurers who venture to this Scottish port city.

Perfect for all those people who have had enough of the Mediterranean climate and want to experience something different.

14. Kiev, Ukraine (Air Malta)

If you’ve never been to Eastern Europe before, Kiev is the perfect place to start.

One of the oldest cities in Europe, this Ukrainian city has something for all the adventurers out there, from colourful cathedrals to woodlands and caves to explore.

After all, as the city’s official motto states, “Everything starts in Kyiv.”

15. Tallinn, Estonia (Ryanair)

Part-medieval-city, part-European-Silicon-Valley, Tallinn needs to be on any bucket-list that includes exploring some of the most beautifully preserved cities of Europe’s past and getting immersed in a techie’s paradise.

Located just a ferry ride away from Finland, Tallinn is also significantly chillier in winter, with sub-zero temperatures making everything from skiing to cross-country sledging an awesome annual occurrence.

The Culture Vultures

16. Venice Marco Polo, Italy (Air Malta)

Paris might be the city of love, but it’s got its work cut out when it comes to Venice.

The romantic floating city in northern Italy will serve you with a generous helping of canals, boat rides, and an overdose of Renaissance perfection.

17. Seville, Spain (Ryanair)

There’s something in the air over Seville that just screams culture. Over 2,000 years old, the Spanish city stood the test of time, obtaining one of the most distinct personalities of any of its European counterparts.

Phoenician, Roman and Arab influences all meet in the gorgeous and warm city, making it a definite visit for culture junkies.

18. Lourdes, France (Air Malta)

Proving that you can get both a dose of history and a glorious view, Lourdes is situated right under the panoramic Pyrenees mountain range.

A small market town bustling with culture, Lourdes has a beautiful fortified castle, a whole lot of southern French charm… and, of course the renowned Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lourdes, commemorating a reported apparition of the Virgin Mary all the way back in 1858.
