One of summer’s biggest festivals is back – and it includes plenty of different wines, so you know it’s going to be good. With over 20 different wines to try out, you’re going to be spoilt for choice.

The Delicata Classic Wine Festival, held at the Upper Barrakka Gardens in Valletta from Thursday 8th to Sunday 11th August is back with a bang and set to raise the bar when it comes to a celebration of Maltese and Gozitan wines.

So save the dates and get ready for some quality vino, as well as other incredible highlights such as great food and amazing live performances.

Here’s everything you need to know about this wine-lover’s haven

The festival runs every night from 7pm to midnight, and Delicata have done their best to make sure you can  get to your favourite wine ASAP.

You can prepay hassle free online and at no extra charge.  Then, on the night, skip the queues and go straight on through to your favourite Delicata wines!

But of course, you can also just show up and pay at the door.

For €16 you get your very own souvenir glass and a purse filled with 24 wine coins, which you can exchange for a hearty handful of 150ml glasses of the good stuff.

Get ready to get your wine on

With over 20 Maltese and Gozitan wines to choose from, you are literally going to be spoilt for choice.

Show you’re wine savvy

Once kitted out with your coins and your glass, let your inner connoisseur loose and taste away in the expert-suggested conventional order. Start with sparkling wine, drink white and pink before red, dry wines before sweeter ones, and unwooded wines before bigger, bolder oaky samples.

This way, your next wine is never overwhelmed by the one that you guzzled before.

The range of wines is on point

Grab a glass of the flagship selection Gran Cavalier and Grand Vin de Hauteville for eight coins, six coins for Medina, Victoria Heights and Frizzantes, and four coins for a 150ml pouring of other quality wines such as the Classic Collection, Pjazza Regina, The Falcon, Dolcino and others.

You can also feast on some incredible food

As the classic saying goes, ‘With great wine comes great food’… or, you know, something like that.

You can grab some freshly cooked food at a number of live cooking stalls offering both traditional and international dishes. They’ll be run by names such as Maypole, Gate of India, Noodle Box and Il-Kċina.

And dance the night away to some of the biggest names in Maltese music

Thursday night gets the proper launch treatment with a performance by Kersten Graham + Band and a big opening set from Airport Impressions.

Planet Seed and The Busker perform on Friday, Ben Purpple and Spiteri Lucas Band play on Saturday, and Cash & Band and The Crowns close on Sunday.

With artists like these, we guess you’ll just have to pass by every evening.

Iconic location and breathtaking views

Is there any place better suited to enjoy a proper Maltese glass of wine than the Upper Barrakka Gardens in Valletta?

The answer is no, no there isn’t.

You can enter the gardens through the standard entrance – but you can take a shortcut via the Upper Barrakka Lift
