The Notorious VS The Diamond: Malta Prepares For A Nail-Biting UFC Battle
The last time Conor ‘The Notorious’ McGregor (10-2 UFC) and Dustin ‘The Diamond’ Poirier (18-5 UFC) squared up, it took the former less than two minutes to score a TKO victory.
But almost seven years later, Poirier is adamant about learning from his mistakes and re-emerging on top.
This Saturday, Poirier is set to rematch McGregor in a lightweight main event at Abu Dhabi’s Etihad Arena, and this time, Poirier has learnt from his mistakes.
The Diamond is well-aware of the danger McGregor poses in the fight’s early minutes. That’s why he’s adamant about prioritising defense early on and playing the long game.
“When we’re dry early, he has all the pop and the spring still in his step,” Poirier told MMA Junkie.
“Good thing it’s a 25-minute fight, and I feel like I’ve matured and developed my skills enough to be in the right moments and take the right chances and not put myself in harm’s way right off the bat.”
But whilst, theoretically, Poirier’s strategy seems ‘foolproof’, McGregor’s confidence still seems to be at an all time high.
Earlier this month, The Notorious said that he’ll knock-out Poirier ‘inside 60’ seconds – almost an entire minute quicker than back in 2014.
You might think McGregor’s bluffing, but it seems like many people agree with him.
