Watch: Smashing Line Up For Rock The South 10th Edition
The 10th edition of Rock the South alternative music festival is nearly here: it’s three full days of music, lights, electrifying energy and dancing, and it’s dedicated to you! Yes, you, whatever your musical taste.
It all started when organiser Nick Morales brought the band AIM – a talented trio from Italy with a singer and guitarist Marco Fiorello and twin brothers Marco and Matteo Camisasca on bass and drums – to Malta and organised a couple of shows for them: that’s when Rock The South was born. It has never looked back.
Since that first occasion, the festival has grown and embraced other music scenes from reggae and hip-hop to dub and electronics. This year, however, although the festival includes the majority of the bands in the island’s alternative music scene, and ranges from punk and metal to electronic and experimental sounds, visitors can expect a return to the festival’s roots.
As well as embracing the hybridisation of sound, an approach which makes Rock The South such an exciting event in Malta’s music calendar, this year there’s an increased focus on guitar-based bands as seen in its early years.
It’s fitting, therefore, that AIM, who now have a considerable following here in Malta, are back this year.
They are joined by other international acts including Bo Ningen are a Japanese four-piece noise and alternative rock band based in London and the dynamic and exploratory English band Pulled Apart by Horses whose influences range from punk and post-punk to hints of prog. It’s an intriguing blend.
With a beach bar vibe beneath the bright lights, a silent disco and energetic talent on two stages over three days, this festival promises magnificent memories for both rock band aficionados and the alternative music scene newbie. Everyone is welcome to join the crowds and rock This rock!
