Watch: The Time For Climate Justice Is Now

Article Featured Image

As the global skies are darkening metaphorically, and the clouds are rolling in, Friends of The Earth Malta present a new #ClimateofChange campaign.

Along with 25 other EU-based organisations they aim to build a better future for those affected by climate change. People forced to flee their land and also the younger generation, who will increasingly face the consequences of the changing world, weak policies and previous inaction.

Dr John Paul Cauchi, a Senior Lecturer in Public Health at Bart’s Medical School on Gozo, explains why it’s so important that we act now and we act fast.

He has been researching the links between climate change and health in Kiribati, a remote atoll nation of 33 scattered low-lying islands which can be found on the equator, south of Hawaii and north-east of Australia in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

These islands are stunning – palm trees line long white-sand beaches where turquoise seas meet wide blue skies – but sadly they won’t be stunning for long. In fact, the whole country won’t even exist anymore if climate change continues as predicted.

And then what will happen to the 129,000 who live there?

The world is likely to see as many as 100 million climate refugees within a generation and yet climate refugees are not even recognised in international law. It’s clear that something needs to be done.

In addition to those losing their homes, many more people are also losing their livelihoods as the earth warms and the seas rise.

With this new #ClimateofChange campaign, Friends of the Earth Malta and their partners are working for radical systemic change to mitigate the damage we’ve already done to the planet and arguing for climate justice for those affected.

They’re asking us to act now to make changes for a better world, for our individual health and for humanity. Let’s all work together across barriers and borders to address the climate crises and demand action so that the future for people near and far is sustainable and just.

Friends of the Earth Malta is asking you to join the Climate of Change campaign today and add your name to a letter being sent to Ministers Byron Camilleri, Miriam Dalli and Ian Borg demanding climate justice.
