Over the past year, the EU has demonstrated its commitment to progress and sustainable development through a multitude of pivotal initiatives.

From its unwavering support for Ukraine to landmark rules on gender equality, here are TEN key initiatives taken by the EU over the past twelve months:

1. Peace and Solidarity

The EU has continued to stand shoulder to shoulder with Ukraine as it defended itself from the war of aggression by Russia. It has also stopped imports of Russian coal and slashed imports of Russian oil and filled European gas storage to record levels, reaching over 95%.

2. Energy

As its steps up its fight against climate change, for the first time in history, the EU produced more electricity from wind and solar than from fossil fuels.

3. Environment

The EU is accelerating the clean energy transition via the implementation of NextGenerationEU, with close to EUR 270 billion available to Member States to implement their planned investment and reforms. This includes expanding renewable energy, rolling out greener vehicles and public transport and making our buildings and public spaces more energy efficient.

4. Jobs

Specific incentives and support measures have contributed to a strong labour market, with unemployment rates hitting record lows and increasing employment. This outcome owes much to the decisive action taken by the EU.

5. Circular Economy

The Commission has adopted several proposals to fulfil the commitments of the circular economy action plan, including proposals for a regulation on packaging and waste and an eco-design for sustainable products regulation

6. Skills

The EU has increased investment in infrastructure and skills aimed at bridging the digital divide to ensure that no one is left behind

7. Digital

As part of European Year of Skills, the Commission adopted two new proposals on digital skills and digital education and training. These aim to support Member States and the education and training sector in providing high-quality, inclusive and accessible digital education and training to develop the digital skills required in a modern economy.

8. Youth

In 2023, the Commission has increased the Erasmus+ budget to a new total of EUR 4.43 billion, the highest annual financial envelope ever reached. Among many other projects, the Erasmus+ now supports 50 European Universities alliances involving more than 430 higher education institutions.

9. Gender Equality

The EU adopted landmark rules to enhance gender balance on corporate boards, mandating that at least 40% of non-executive director positions in listed companies will be occupied by the underrepresented sex by 2026.

10. Migration

Measures undertaken by the EU, Member States and international partners have contributed to a significant decrease in the number of irregular arrivals.

In a rapidly changing global landscape, the European Union has once again showcased its ability to adapt, lead, and inspire. As the world watches, the EU’s endeavours serve as a beacon for collective action and international collaboration.
