Gozitan University Students And MP Alex Borg Demand Right To Sit Exams From Gozo

The Gozo University Group (GUG) has issued a statement concerning February’s exams, warning they were held exclusively in Malta, forcing Gozitan students to commute during some fairly bad weather.

They are seeking to ensure that upcoming exams are organised so that Gozitan students can sit exams without having to trek across sea and land.

GUG contends that certain exams were being run through WISEflow – the program adopted by the University of Malta near the outset of the COVID-19 pandemic – when lockdowns rendered the ability to study, work and sit exams from home a necessity.

“Certain examinations being held as ‘WISEflow on Campus’ were being held solely in Malta. The only materials needed for such exams are the students’ own laptops and chargers, as well as adequate internet connection,” said GUG.

“This type of exam session could easily have been achieved in Gozo, with some arrangements to the Gozo University Campus or other official examination locations.”

Since the easing of lockdown restrictions, UoM has tried to discourage departments from conducting WISEflow examinations across most departments – favouring in-person attendance instead.

Given that the examinations being referenced by GUG were being conducted through the online program, with in-person invigilation, it would presumably not be difficult for the same to be achieved at the UoM Gozo Campus in Xewkija.

“It is a shame that such a campus, which is an extension to UoM, is available in Gozo but not being utilised to its full extent,” said GUG.

“It is imperative that this matter is to be sorted imminently, so as to not cause further inconvenience to Gozitan students, who have had to travel amidst the already stressful exam season last semester, coupled with the heavy storms which they faced in February.”

GUG used this opportunity as a segue into less pressing but more long-term problem – “the lack of adequate equipment in the Gozo Campus”.

“It is a shame that the only use for the Gozo Campus is to hold exam sessions and a limited number of small courses – but with an added inconvenience that not all types of exams may be held there due to lack of equipment and basic necessities, such as a proper internet connection, which is a necessary commodity nowadays.”

PN MP Alex Borg amplified GUG’s statement on social media.

“I appeal to strengthen the use of the Gozo Campus within the University of Malta and not reduce it as is currently happening,” he said.

“Gozitan students have a point. Simple solutions we identify – which could save an extra journey during exam season – should be implemented as soon as possible, and if possible in time for the June exam session.”

“Gozitan students deserve better than such poor treatment,” concluded GUG’s statement.
