‘Tuna L-Marki’ – MCAST Students Create Petition For Government Intervention
KSM (Kunsill Studenti MCAST) has called on its students and others to sign a petition for Prime Minister Robert Abela to intervene to retrieve their marks.
This comes after a long debacle involving the MUT and the Office of the Ombudsman, where the students’ assessment marks have not yet been released due to disputes with the MUT. Approximately 8,000 students have been affected by this issue.
The Commissioner for Education commented on the matter:“The Office of the Ombudsman acknowledges the fundamental right of educators to engage in industrial action as a means to voice their legitimate grievances and to seek a fair resolution thereto. However, this should be done in a way to cause the least harm to third parties, in this case, students, who also have a right to know, without undue or unnecessary delay, the result of their studies throughout the year. Both parties should refrain from using the students’ plight to put undue pressure. Furthermore, both parties should not display intransigence.”
Lovin Malta reached out to a KSM member, specifically its media officer, who said:“We would like to emphasise that while it is essential to respect the rights of lecturers for fair pay, it is equally important to remember that students’ futures are at stake.
We must protect students from being collateral damage in this – or any – dispute. KSM will continue advocating for the rights and best interests of all MCAST students. Our top priority is to mitigate damage to students as much as possible.”
