Brighton Based Maltese All-Femme Band Releases New Single Touching Upon Technology And The Patriarchy

Maltese post-punk band Ġenn has been making waves in the UK, having just released their new single ‘A Reprise (That Girl)’ earlier today.

Following their acclaimed 2022 single ‘Rohmeresse’, Anglo-Maltese quartet ĠENN continue their powerful and thoughtful intent with brand new post-punk stomp ‘A Reprise (That Girl)’ out April 18th.

Steering clear of simplistic, surface-value interpretation, the track’s mechanical propulsion mirrors the repetitive quest for technological gratification.

Vocalist Leona Farrugia’s noire-tinged vocals speak of the everyday digestion of a barrage of information, whereby an individual is coerced into a constant act of self-measurement and comparison.

The track features backing vocals from John Newton from the cult South London noise-rock duo JOHN. Leona hones in on the personal relevance of the themes

“Naturally I’ve always felt like there’s a pressure to compare myself, be that through the lens of present technologies or within the creative industry.”

“It’s something that can be very debilitating, especially to young people in a patriarchal society.”

The quartet has a resolutely independent streak-as evidenced by the visual world entirely created by lead-vocalist Leona, as well as the establishment of the Liminal Collective through which they’ll be releasing their music.

They have an untrammeled attitude towards fusing the personal with the political via their amorphous sound, which touches on post-punk, art-pop, psych-rock, noise-rock, and more.

ĠENN are made up of Janelle Borg-guitars (she/her), Sofia Rosa Cooper-drums (she/they), Leona Farrugia-Vocals(she/they), and Leanne Zammit-bass (she/her). Majority queer, the first iteration of the band started 10 years ago in Malta, before moving to Brighton.

Over this time they have built determined bonds as a self-described sisterhood, founded on instinctive trust and affection. Key shows have come in support of Pussy Riot, PINS, JOHN, BC Camplight, Girli, TV Priest, Bull, and Hands Off Gretel, as well as performances at ESNS representing Malta.

The band has found radio champions in Steve Lamacq, Amy Lamé, Tom Robinson, and Don Lettsat BBC 6 Music as well as John Kennedy at Radio X (including a live session) and KEXP.

Press acclaim has come from Clash, Under The Radar, DIY, Line Of Best Fit, and more. These nods of approval across the landscape set the foundations for an imperious and exciting push forward.

‘A Reprise (That Girl)’ was co-produced by ĠENN, Gilla Band’s Dan Fox, and Tom Hill. Mixed by Tom Hill at The Book House. Mastered by Katie Tavini at Weird Jungle.
