Camping, Jamming And Yoga For A Good Cause: Malta’s Girl Guides Take To Buskett For Mental Health Awareness
Mental health has been a topic of many discussion in Malta over the past couple of years, but many taboos sadly still exist. Most issues are still rarely talked about, and many are still afraid to speak up about any problems they might face. Luckily for us, things are changing and people are finally taking steps towards improving the situation.
Malta Girl Guides (MGG) celebrated World Mental Health Day in a very special way this year, conducting a campaign to push positive mental health though their event Marvellous Minds.
World Mental Health Day was celebrated on the 10th of October, however these girls know that it takes more than one day to raise awareness and promote a positive attitude towards mental health.
A national camp for Rangers Guides (14 to 18 year olds) will be taking place between the 26th and 28th of October at the Verdala Palace grounds. On Saturday evening, the camp will kick off with a campfire for both the MGG members and distinguished guests.
Discussions will be held to fight off stigma towards mental illnesses. Their focus will mainly be on the mental wellbeing of the group’s members.
These kick-ass girls will be working towards a more holistic and inclusive association, where members will promote the benefits nature and physical activity have on mental health.
They aim towards equipping young people with self-care skills which will help them steer in the right direction.
Aġenzija Żagħżagħ’s Be Active Scheme has helped in funding this camp, which will include activities such as jamming sessions, yoga and art workshops. A coping strategies workshop will also be organised along with a laser tag tournament and a scavenger hunt.
Marvellous Minds will also include a new badge curriculum for a non-formal program to help develop awareness on mental health among people of different age groups.
A mental health first aid training programme will also be pushed for all leaders and adult volunteers thanks to a collaboration with Richmond Foundation. You go girls!
