Walking along the Tigne seafront will soon be a different experience, with a new hotel and lido set to drastically change the landscape.

The new Fortina hotel project, which includes 60 designer luxury apartments, had already been approved by the Planning Authority, and it has now passed its latest hurdle.

Economy Minister Silvio Schembri announced that he will present Parliament with a resolution to amend the government’s 1991 lease agreement with Fortina so as to allow the company to upgrade the lido.

The current pool will be replaced with a completely new one, and a new restaurant will be built, adjacent to a new public garden, from where people will be able to enjoy panoramic views of Valletta.

The foreshore will be extended, and Fortina will be obliged to connect it to a public passageway, and fork out money for maintenance works out of their own pockets.

Pontoons will be built at the coast, where boats will be able to dock during the summer months, but they must be dismantled in winter.

Fortina’s new lido was one of four private projects that Schembri announced he will be seeking Parliament’s approval for through its amendment of their respective government leases.

Others include the upgrading of the Freeport through further land reclamation, the conversion of the old Edible Oil factory into an office block, and the construction of a Lidl supermarket in Ħaż-Żebbuġ.
