Churches across Malta and Gozo lit up their facades pink last night as a sign of protest against a bill that will allow doctors to terminate pregnancies if the mother’s life or health is at risk.

In a statement, the ‘Inti Tista’ Ssalvani’ pro-life movement said that parishes wanted to send a message to the government to change the amendment which it warned would “introduce abortion”.

“This action of solidarity took place after the bishops of Malta and Gozo appealed to the public to attend a march at 3pm in Valletta in favour of life and against abortion.”

Meanwhile, pro-life youth group I See Life placed prams and pushchairs in front of the crib adjacent to Castille, along with posters of unborn babies with the message Toqtolnix (Don’t kill me).

“This action took place in front of the crib to remind the people that the Government is introducing this amendment during Christmas time, at a time when families are preparing to spend time in each other’s company and when we celebrate life,” the group said.

Earlier today, Prime Minister Robert Abela pledged to see the proposed law through despite the considerable backlash against it.

“We’re ready to keep on discussing but the main principles behind the bill will remain strong as steel,” Abela said. “Women’s lives shouldn’t be subjected to political compromise and women’s health isn’t a negotiable topic.”
