Just after Ukraine hosted EU foreign ministers in Kyiv, reports are brewing in Brussels that a diplomatic roadmap is forming for the war-struck country’s accession to the European Union.

A publication by Politico citing anonymous sources said that a progress report is due in November, on how Ukraine is doing in meeting seven conditions for entry into the 27-country bloc. According to the publication, the only sticky issue is one to do with minorities.

Politico suggested that once the progress report is published the EU Commission will issue a statement making it difficult for members to refuse “open negotiations” that kick off this December.

Last week, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola met Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskky, firmly supporting the country’s accession.

“Nothing is off the table to get Ukraine into the European Union (EU)”, President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola exclusively told the Guardian, including removing trade tariffs and granting access to internal markets before full membership.

Metsola has been a prime advocate of the fight against the Russian aggression in Ukraine. She was the first political leader to visit Ukraine at the start of April 2022 and since then, her efforts have only intensified.

By June of this year, Ukraine had satisfied two out of seven conditions and made good progress on a third.

These conditions need to be fulfilled for accession talks to begin. The completed conditions relate to the media sector which was amended to align with EU standards, along with the creation of two high-level judicial bodies.
