A 21-year-old man from Dingli who was filmed beating up a man and a woman in broad daylight in Xemxija after they were involved in a petty car accident has been released on bail.

Adam Zammit Soler, who runs a turnkey construction company, left a man and woman with black eyes and other injuries decked out on the road in Xemxija last Thursday after the two vehicles were involved in a minor incident.

In the footage, Soler, a large man, sits on and pummels the defenceless man, who is laid out on the floor, as the woman screams for him to stop. He then gets up and punches the woman, laying her out on the ground.

He then drives away.

In court, it was revealed that the footage was taken by someone who lived nearby, and heard a commotion outside, NET News reported. A police inspector said Soler only stopped beating his victims when he noticed people were watching him.

The woman was left with grievous injuries following the attack.

In front of magistrate Astrid Grima, his defence lawyers Nicholas Mifsud and Robert Gauci Maestre said that Soler employed 10 people in his company, and requested he be given bail.

They also suggested they were in possession of footage showing that Soler had been provoked into beating the two victims.

They asked how the state would benefit from locking up Soler, who is being accused of injuring others after losing his temper. Mifsud also said he expects charges to be brought against the victims in light of the footage they possess.

Though police argued against allowing Soler out on bail, the court granted him freedom.

He was ordered not to approach or go near the victims, place a deposit of €5,000 alongside a personal guarantee of €10,000. He was also ordered to sign a bail book daily and follow a court-mandated curfew.

A protection order was also granted to the victims.

What do you make of the court’s response to this vicious public attack?
