Plans have been submitted to the Planning Authority for the development of a drive-in cinema on ODZ land in Marsaskala.

The development in question would encircle the historic Mamo Tower at Triq id-Daħla ta’ San Tumas.

The plans, designed by architect Brian Ebejer, were submitted on behalf of lawyer Martin Testaferrata Moroni Viani on 15th October.

Built way back in 1657, Mamo Tower was subsequently acquired by NGO Din l-Art Ħelwa who restored  it between 1994 and 1995. Mamo Tower has now been open to the public since 2003 and is occasionally used for re-enactments.

According to the public application form submitted on 15th October, the proposed development will lead to the demolition or alteration of rubble walls.

Around 138 separate objections to the development have been made since 2nd January.

The Marsaskala Council is one of the latest entities to put forward an objection.

“Such an application would destroy the environment of a highly sensitive geological area, apart from the fact that there is a historical tower in the vicinity,” the council wrote.

“Marsaskala local council had even put forward objection of several other applications, including a hotel.”

Cultural preservation organisation Wirt iż-Żejtun shared similar sentiments.

“This development can adversely impact Mamo Tower and the San Gejtanu church, two historical buildings,” the organisation said.

“Even though the Planning Authority has not yet scheduled said buildings, they possess certain architectural and historical value that merits them the highest degree of protection.”

Individuals who would like to object to said development can do so until 1st February 2021.
