Drugs Keep Going Missing From Malta’s Court Storeroom
Malta’s courts have a love-hate relationship with drugs – they mainly love to hate on anyone caught using drugs. But it turns out that the courts have a new issue with drugs – they keep going missing while under court custody.
This week, the Times of Malta reported that a magisterial inquiry has been established to figure out how an “unspecified” number of ecstasy pills disappeared from the court’s storeroom.
Seeing how Maltese authorities generally overreact as soon as drugs are involved, it’s doubly embarrassing to find out that the courts are about as competent in taking care of their eccies as a first timer going to Liquid.
But the ecstasy pills aren’t the only drugs they lost
Three kilograms of cannabis resin has also gone missing from the court’s storeroom. That’s three bricks of hash, people.

Both sets of drugs were exhibits to be used in two separate pending criminal cases against two men. However, possibly even worse than losing so many drugs is the fact that the cannabis bricks seem to have been missing since 2004, when the cannabis was confiscated – and nobody noticed in the decade and a half since then.
The case involving the missing cannabis was set to for a trial by jury, presided over by Justice Antonio Mizzi, next week. The cannabis was meant to be presented during the case. However, since the cannabis is missing – and let’s face it, probably totally smoked up – the trial has been postponed.
In all seriousness, if Malta is going to pursue an outdated policy of criminalising drug users, the least the authorities could do is take care of the drugs when they’re in their custody. People literally risked going to jail to get their hands on those drugs.
