Emmy Bezzina: ‘Something Being Built That Will Destroy Your Life? Go And Knock It Down!’

Media personality and lawyer Emmy Bezzina had some interesting advice for Pembroke residents unhappy with a controversial Pembroke project – knock it down.

Speaking to podcaster Jon Mallia on his show, Bezzina commented on the passiveness of the Maltese.

“A nation that grumbles and then does nothing in practice,” he claimed. Mallia asked what kind of drastic thing the people could do about this.

“Easy!” Bezzina retorted. “Is something being built that will break you? Go and knock it down.”

Jon asked: “So you’d get a bulldozer…?”

“Go and knock down the ongoing works,” he interrupted. “Then contest it in court.”

Bezzina goes on to say that db Group bought the site of the former Institute of Tourism Studies (ITS) for €15 million (note: db Group maintains that it paid €60 million for the site) when it is worth hundreds of millions, if not a billion, while casting a shadow over the whole of Pembroke.

Despite around 6,000 objections being raised by the public against this gargantuan project, the Planning Authority (PA) voted 10-4 in favour of the project.

He heaped praise on Gżira Mayor Conrad Borg Manché for fighting the PA, which Bezzina describes as incompetent and corrupt, against moving the existing petrol station into the public gardens.

Bezzina denounced the hypocrisy of Gżira politicians on both sides of the political divide who failed to congratulate Borg Manché for fighting, and winning, this David vs Goliath battle alone, at the cost of his job.

What do you make of Emmy Bezzina’s assertions?
