‘Festival Of Tables And Chairs’: Packed Valletta Streets Raises Ire For Some As Others Celebrate

The amount of chairs and tables placed throughout Malta’s capital city’s streets has led some to wonder what the future of Valletta looks like.

“A festival of chairs and tables,” Valletta page Belt Valletta commented as it shared an image of at least two rows of furniture placed in the middle of a busy Valletta street.

Within hours, over 100 comments had been left – with some celebrating the fact that Valletta was so busy again after the pandemic.

“During COVID-19 you complained that Valletta was dead and businesses were empty… and now you are jealous of those making some money,” said one person.

“It’s just like any other city, if you go to Rome or Florence it’s the same,” said another.

“Some Valletta residents think that just because they live there, the city is theirs… if they have permission to do so, they should do so – the capital city is for all of us.”

However, others agreed with the page.

“The streets have become restaurants with ridiculous prices. A marketplace was taken so that more space would be given to the public and the businessman just just taken the public’s land while us idiots need to squeeze around the sides while enjoying the smell of cooked oil,” said one person.

The discussion comes as Valletta’s hustle and bustle continues rise, with increased opening hours for establishments rubbing some the wrong way.

Just recently, a band playing their regular late night gig in Strait Street for an establishment had a bucket of water hurled at them and their audience by an unknown person.
