Carmel Agius, an art teacher convicted of sexually abusing his 12-year-old student, has had his teaching warrant withdrawn.

The 55-year-old Fgura resident was found guilty of groping at least one of his art pupils at school back in 2018.

Agius was jailed in February 2023 after being found guilty of sexually molesting one of his art students at his school studio.

Agius appealed his sentence, but to no avail, with his two-year-effective prison sentence being confirmed by the judge.

Eduction Minister Clifton Grima has taken the art teacher’s warrant and his name was placed on the sex offenders registry.

The Court rejected a request prohibiting the disclosure of the perpetrator’s name. That being said, the names of the state school and the victim were prohibited from publication.

The victim had told the court that prior to the school’s Easter holidays in 2018, the class was working on a project on canvas with the art teacher.

According to the girl, the teacher informed his students that they could pay the school’s art studio a visit during their free lectures to complete the art project since, if left unfinished, their final mark would be affected.

During a free lesson, the victim went to the art studio, only to find the door locked. When she knocked, the accused opened the door and locked it behind her.

While inside, Agius stood behind the girl and started groping her inappropriately and pressing himself against her.

The victim said that she told her teacher that she was feeling uncomfortable with the situation and moved away.

While on a holiday with her family, the girl divulged with her family what had transpired at the art studio, after she broke down in tears upon seeing an older man dancing with a young girl in a movie.

The girl’s mother then filed a police report which triggered an investigation which sent for over 50 of the accused’s private art school’s students.

Police received more reports regarding separate incidents that occurred at Agius’ private art studio. The man is now facing other criminal proceedings over these reports.
