An abandoned and clearly domesticated dog has been found at Dingli Cliffs, with the person who found it urging interested people to give her a new home.

Nick Spagnol told Lovin Malta that he spotted the dog while stargazing at Dingli Cliffs on Saturday night.

“I saw a white thing running towards me, if we had wolves in Malta I’d have assumed it was a wolf,” he said. “She came up to me and I removed twigs from her fur and tried to clean her with wipes. When the wipes fell to the floor, she picked them up in her mouth and gave them back to me.”

“When a policeman came over, he told her to sit and she obeyed him and gave him her paw. When we opened the car door, she flew inside and started crying, as though she was begging us not to leave her outside alone.”

Nick said he called up the Animal Welfare Directorate but they told him there was nothing they could do as the dog wasn’t microchipped or injured. Animal sanctuaries told him they didn’t have any immediately available space.

Unable to take the dog back home with him, he had no choice but to leave her outside with some water, although he intends to return to give her some food.

After urging anyone interested in adopting the dog to contact him, Nick found a potential fosterer, but couldn’t find the dog afterward. Lovin Malta has received reports that Animal Welfare picked up the dog and took him to the animal hospital since Nick got in touch with them.

This isn’t the first time Animal Welfare have been accused of wiping their hands clean when it comes to abandoned dogs.

Last month, a member of the public spotted four abandoned and flea-infested dogs in a Gudja field, whose owner suddenly stopped appearing to tend to them, with fears that he may have died.

Animal Welfare refused to take them in and delouse them since they weren’t microchipped, and the MSPCA eventually had to step in to save them.

The Animal Welfare Directorate has faced a number of damning accusations in recent months, from being unable to carry out inspections to euthanising animals needlessly.

Fosterers and sanctuaries have long been warning that they are full to the brim and recently staged a protest held outside of Parliament, urging he Maltese authorities to take a good look at the current situation vulnerable animals in Malta face and releasing 10 proposals to help better the sector.
