Hard AF: Maltese Athletes To Compete In Military-Like Obstacle Course World Championship This Weekend
Pushing your bodies to the limit is not the first thing you’d think of when it comes to the weekend, but that’s exactly what 22 Maltese athletes will be doing this weekend.
The islanders will be competing for gold at the only independent global championship for Obstacle Course Racing in the UK.
Months and months of hard work and preparation have gone into preparing for the OCR games in Kelvedon Hatch this weekend, where Maltese athletes will be competing both together as a team and as individuals in several events; in either case still representing Malta as a nation.
Ursula Farrugia, George Said, Clayton Lautier, Jonathan Sant, Alan Fava, Michelle Mifsud, Steve Ritchie, Marquita Muscat, Louise Pisani, Rebecca Naudi, Christine Degabriele, Anna Aloisio, Wojtek Stellmach, Richalda Galea, Kenneth Galea, Stefani Spiteri, Jurgen Pavanello, James Mamo, Sandra Borg, Neil Falzon, Yasmine Mcgahern and Deyan Farrugia will be carrying the Maltese flag as they conquer various obstacles next weekend.
If you don’t know what the OCR Championships are, just picture The Grid, but 10 times harder and likened to the equivalent of military training.
Challenges may involve climbing over walls, carrying heavy objects, crawling under barbed wire… and although it may sound like fun, it requires months and months of training.
Maltese athletes who qualified as a result of their trifecta weekend in Orte, Italy last April will be able to compete in the 3km and 15km races for their respective age groups on Friday 11th October
Those who didn’t participate in a qualifying event can still compete at those distances on the same day, but in the open category. Other Maltese athletes will also be competing in the Relay Team Race and the 100-meter sprint held on Sunday, October 13th.
There will also be a 7 kilometre charity obstacle race being held on Saturday 12th October.
One of those athletes is none other than Alan Fava who competed in the OCR World Championships last year and knows exactly what Team Malta has to go through this weekend.
