Hibernians And Ħamrun Spartans Face Tough Challenges To Make History In Europa Conference League

Hibernians and Ħamrun Spartans face tough challenges this evening to make history and become the first Maltese teams to make it to the playoff stage of the Europa Conference League.

Hibs, who are playing at home tonight at 8pm, secured a 1-1 draw in the first leg against Latvia’s FK RFS  despite being down to 10 men and they’ll need to put in the same spirited display to come through tonight.

Last season, their hearts were broken in the same round against Riga FC, another Latvian club, in a match that saw no less than three red cards. But coach Andrea Pisanu believes that his team have the belief to pull off the upset.

“The players showed that we can be positive and have our chance. At this moment, it’s about belief – there are two teams and one goes through. Why not us?” he said.

Ħamrun, meanwhile, faces an uphill battle in Bulgaria after losing 2-1 to a last-minute goal during the first leg in Malta.

Also kicking off at 8pm, Ħamrun will need to go out and get the goals, which might just lift off players’ shoulders in what’s expected to be a tough match.

This year, Maltese teams have made the island proud in the Europa Conference League. Gżira United fought admirably to the third qualifying round before bowing out last Tuesday.
