Hotels Step In To Give Marooned Gozitans Shelter After Storm Shuts Down Ferry Service

Gozitans stranded in Malta will be offered discounted rates in hotels across the island after the Gozo Channel ferry service was temporarily suspended due to bad weather.

In a series of Facebook posts, Gozo Minister Justyne Caruana listed a comprehensive list of the hotels and their prices. Gozitans using the hotel must keep their receipt.

The suspension of the ferries makes travel between Gozo and Malta impossible meaning that some Gozitans may be stranded on Malta for another day.

It remains to be seen what will happen to Maltese stuck in Gozo.

The issue, unsurprisingly, has brought renewed discussion on the proposed tunnel linking the two islands.

The tender for the tunnel is expected to be issued in the coming weeks.

The 13km tunnel, which will link Nadur to the hamlet of L-Imbordin, has courted controversy.  Surveys have shown that while the majority seems to agree with the tunnel, a very sizeable minority are fearful of the environmental and social damage it could do to Gozo.
