‘Journalism Is Not A Crime’: PEN Malta Stands With Mark Camilleri And Endorses Tonight’s Protest In Valletta

Journalism is not a crime, PEN Malta, an offshoot of PEN International, has said while condemning the latest actions taken against Mark Camilleri and endorsing tonight’s protest.

This comes after the criminal court ordered police to pursue author Mark Camilleri for contempt of court after leaking thousands of messages between suspected murderer Yorgen Fenech and former Junior Minister Rosianne Cutajar.

“PEN Malta has expressed its solidarity with author Mark Camiller who is being pursued by the police for having exposed the corrupt proximity Yorgen Fench, the man accused of killing Daphne Caruana Galizia and long suspected of systemic bribery and corruption, and Rosianne Cutajar, a ruling party MP, and government official,” PEN Malta said.

“We find it outrageous that while actively ignoring evidence of corruption and doing nothing about it, our institutions show such zeal when persecuting truth-sayers who denounce that corruption.”

“If there is to be the rule of law, then the law must be enforced without fear of or favour for the corrupt and the criminal,” it appealed.

PEN Malta is therefore endorsing the protest called by other civil society organisations for today, Friday at 6pm, in Valletta.

It also called on people of goodwill to attend the protest in solidarity with Mark Camilleri and “in defense of the people’s right to know about the illicit pursuits and activities of their politicians”.

Pressure group Repubblika will be leading the protest called for later today along Republic Street in Valletta at 6pm, in light of the latest court order against Camilleri.

“We learned nothing from the assassination of Daphne,” Repubblika President Robert Aquilina said in reference to the 2017 murder of the Maltese journalist. “This isn’t democracy.”
