Climate crisis is coming for us all… and our favourite bubbly drinks too.

New research has found that the grapes that produce a special sparkling wine produced in Italy’s vineyards – prosecco – are dwindling due to extreme weather and soil exhaustion.

An analysis published in iScience journal in July suggested that this deadly combination is causing the production of prosecco to come under threat.

In 2023, Prosecco producers faced heavy spring rainfall and hailstones, followed by a blisteringly hot summer.

This unstable weathercould reduce the Italian wine grape harvests by up to a fifth, producers warned.

Still, demand has exploded by more than 33% in five years.

“The risk is not only losing an agricultural product or seeing a landscape change, negatively impacting the local economy,” says the study’s lead author, Dr Paolo Tarolli, from the University of Padova in Italy.

“The risk is losing entire communities’ history and their cultural roots.”

Other vintages like Burgundy, Grand Cru and Cabernet Sauvignon could also be under threat.
