Malta Police Force Amps Up Traffic Inspections With 90 Vehicles Stopped In One Night

The Malta Police Force seems to be amping up traffic inspections with 90 vehicles stopped on Wednesday night on the Marsa/Ħamrun by-pass.

While many vehicles were in compliance with the law, officials stated that a couple of drivers were arrested for seriously violating traffic regulations.

These inspections were coordinated by the Police Force in conjunction with Transport Malta, Jobs Plus, and the Detention Services.

Many vehicles were given contraventions due to violations related to vehicles with no valid registration plates and with invalid licenses, while others had defects in their vehicles that posed a danger, resulting in the impoundment of seven vehicles, three other vehicles were also towed because they did not have Maltese registration.

In addition, tests for alcohol intoxication were conducted on drivers who appeared to be under the influence. Among these, three individuals were arrested in connection with irregularities in their residence status in Malta.

Another driver was arrested for attempting to evade inspections, as well as for not having a valid driver’s license and insurance policy, while the vehicle’s license had not been paid.

Malta is known for its unsafe roads enhanced by relatively unenforced rules. In fact, a recent scandal involving the former transport minister who allegedly helped people get their licenses in exchange for votes has only reinforced the public’s fear of the islands’ roads.

So, seeing that the local authorities are, to some extent, taking these concerns seriously is a positive development for Malta.
