It’s that time of year again. No, not Christmas, but the Malta Book Festival, which is held at the Mediterranean Conference Centre in Valletta from the 7-11 November.

This year the event does not only feature a long list of participants from all sectors of the book industry, all under one roof, but also world-renowned social activist Naomi Klein, author of The Shock Doctrine and This Changes Everything: Capitalism vs the Climate. You will have the opportunity to buy new books, check out all publishers, bookshops and meet your favourite writers.

Already intrigued? Here are seven other reasons why you should visit the Malta Book Festival 2018.

1. It’s a great way to get your kids (or your students) to start reading

If your young ones are pretty stubborn when it comes to getting them excited about a book, taking them to the Malta Book Festival should be enough to rope them in. The National Book Council has made increasing efforts to use this occasion to promote a culture of reading and love of books among children and teens.

For teachers, the Malta Book Festival website invites teachers to apply for a school visit, which is a great way to entertain the kids on a rainy November school-day.

2. Meet award-winning international authors

Activist and writer Naomi Klein will attend the festival this year on Friday 9 November, and will be discussing global threats such as climate-change, neoliberalist policies and disaster economics.

The author was awarded the Sydney Peace Prize for “inspiring us to stand up locally, nationally and internationally to demand a new agenda for sharing the planet that respects human rights and equality.” She’s incredibly informed and we’re lucky that the Malta Book Fest 2018 will be hosting her. We’re so there.

3. Hear what the authors have to say

On Wednesday 7 November, the main conference Literature in the Diaspora will take place with the participation of four international and Maltese guests. Featuring Maltese writer Lou Drofenik, Nikola Petković from Croatia, Vera Duarte from Cabo Verde and Philip Ò Ceallaigh from Ireland, it will be led by Maltese/Serbian journalist and writer Teador Relijić.

These four writers have all experienced displacement in their own unique way. They will discuss what a culture shock -or lack thereof- it was for them, and how their literary work was affected by it.

4. It’s freeee!

And don’t we all love hearing that. Apart from the Danusan shows, anyone can enter at any time and join in on any events that they like, while getting the chance to meet local and international authors while browsing through books.

5. Celebrate local achievements

The Festival will be celebrating Lou Drofenik and Victor Fenech, who have both National Book Prize awards related to their literary work. You’ll have the opportunity to meet these two authors and talk to them about anything you want. Whenever else can you do that?

6. Attend the DANUSAN (Books Come to Life) shows

On the evenings of Friday and Saturday at 7pm, and at 3pm on Sunday, a performance will be held by the dynamic duo Danusan. The entertaining show about books coming to life that families with children will be sure to enjoy.
