Energy Minister Miriam Dalli and a spokesperson for the Public Works Ministry have “categorically denied” rumors surrounding the alleged removal of Enemalta CEO Jonathan Cardona.

These clarifications come after rumors were fuelled by a report suggesting that Cardona had been fired due to the recent series of power outages during a summer heatwave.

According to Energy Minister Miriam Dalli, Jonathan Cardona is still actively reporting to work and remains in his role as CEO of Enemalta.

“He is part of the focus we have right now to strengthen investment in energy in our country, particularly in the distribution system,” Dalli told reporters. She emphasized Cardona’s importance in the investment in energy infrastructure and distribution systems, implicitly rebutting suggestions that he was ‘unfit’ for the job.

The Ministry For Public Works And Planning Also told Lovin Malta that they categorically deny that Jonathan Cardona was appointed CEO at OHSA

Jonathan Cardona was assigned the CEO of Enemalta in October 2021, succeeding Jason Vella, who was transferred following a series of summertime power cuts. The Shift recently published a report claiming that Cardona had been fired for similar issues related to power outages. These outages had caused significant public outcry, with citizens demanding compensation for business losses and other inconveniences caused by the blackouts.

The report went on to suggest that Cardona was to be transferred to the Occupational Health and Safety Authority (OHSA), whose current CEO is Mark Gauci

The Nationalist Party took the opportunity to question Cardona’s qualifications for leading the OHSA and asked the government to either confirm or deny the reports. Dalli’s response highlighted what she saw as the party’s shifting stance on energy issues. She noted that the party had seemingly dropped several proposals it had made in late July to reform the energy sector.
