The Italian coastguard have retrieved the bodies of a mother and her one-year-old baby after two migrant boats sank off the island of Lampedusa.

The two boats had left the Tunisian port city of Sfax carrying 48 and 42 people respectively – and the Italian coastguard said on Sunday that they rescued 57 people following the sinkings.

More than 30 are thought to be missing.

Authorities in Sfax, which is located approximately 130km from Lampedusa, are in the process of determining the migrants’ nationalities. The majority of them, however, originated from countries in sub-Saharan Africa.

This tragedy follows June’s tragic shipwreck in Greece, and a separate incident of a ship sinking off Tunisia’s Kerkennah Islands on Sunday, leaving four dead, and 51 missing.
