Prime Minister Joseph Muscat does not rule out running for one of the EU’s top jobs once his term ends, though admitting that it was a ‘long shot’.

Muscat, who has repeatedly said he would not run for another term, was asked by Politico about his political future once he leaves his position in three years time.

“It’s a very long shot for someone from my town,” Muscat said. “I come from a town of 500 people from the smallest member state. It’s a very long shot.”

“But then again, there is a Maltese-[American] running for president of the United States. You might not know it, but Pete Buttigieg, from the Democrats … a very interesting guy, also a small town guy, and the first openly gay candidate to run for president. When we talk, we speak Maltese.”

Muscat has long been tipped for the role of EU Council President, with well-established heads of state and political leaders regularly singing the praises of Malta’s PM.

With Buttigieg potentially leading the Democrats on their crusade against Trump, the prospect of Maltese people running the world could actually become a reality.

Taking to social media, long time Muscat opponent PN MP Simon Busuttil wrote that Muscat threw away all his chances for a top EU post when he kept his Chief of Staff Keith Schembri and Minister Konrad Mizzi in his cabinet despite the Panama Paper revelations.

Matthew Caruana Galizia has said that “a shady politician who allowed the murder of a journalist in his own country has no place managing the affairs of other countries. Keep this man as far away from the EU as possible.”
