Mozart’s First Time: Apollo Et Hyacinthus

Article Featured Image

Can you imagine penning a masterpiece at 11? Well, Mozart did just that with his first opera, Apollo et Hyacinthus.

That’s right, while most of us were just figuring out how to tie our shoes Mozart was crafting operatic gold.

While the world’s been jamming to Mozart’s hits for ages, this early gem has rarely been performed. Taking inspiration from Virgil’s tales of transformations, this opera’s got everything – love, a bit of jealousy, and (wait for it…) a drama involving a rogue discus.

But here’s where it gets spicier. Directed by the fabulous Fabio Ceresa, he just directed Verdi’s Macbeth at the Korean National Opera, this modern take on Apollo et Hyacinthus is about to shed some contemporary light on this 1767 classic, by reemphasising queer elements from the ancient tale of Apollo and Hyacinth.

Brace yourselves for some spectacular talent.

We’re talking global and local stars like Nils Wanderer, Federico Fiorio, and our very own Claire Debono lighting up the stage of our iconic Teatru Manoel. The Arianna Art Ensemble led by the Maestro Giulio Prandi complementing the voices of these musicians by interpreting the music composed by Mozart all those years ago.

So, mark your calendars! This opera extravaganza is hitting the Teatru Manoel stage on the 10th and 11th of November, 7pm sharp. Want in on this Mozart magic? Head over to www.festivals.mt/veof for all the deets and ticket info.

See you there!
