Orchestras, Rock Legends And A Whole Lot Of People: It’s Been A Great Week Of Music For Fosos

Tens of thousands of people descended onto the Fosos for the annual Isle Of MTV extravaganza last week… but it turns out it was just the beginning for 2019’s musical schedule at the massive Floriana venue.

First up was a star-studded night that saw the BBC Orchestra play some of the biggest hits of the last couple of decades to an absolutely packed audience.

Classics from The Lion King and Star Wars featured in the Friday Night Is Music Nights Maltese debut as the entranced seated audience watched glorious rendition after glorious rendition being delivered by the sprawling orchestra.

Oh and yeah, Game Of Thrones’ Charles Dance (that’s Lord Tywin Lannister for you peasants) just casually hosted it all, because duh!

Hits from Queen, Marry Poppins and The Greatest Showman also featured in the night, which saw appearances by big names like  Louise Dearman (who played the roles of both Elphaba and Glinda on the West End production of Wicked), Bradley Jaden (who played Fiyero in Wicked and Javert in Les Miserables on the West End) and Hannah Waddingham (who played Septa Unella on Game of Thrones… that’s the Shame woman!).

To close it all off, the orchestra gave the thousands-strong audience a fantastic interpretation of the Maltese national, tugging at everyone’s heartstrings in style.

If you missed the fantastic show, it’ll actually be broadcast on BBC Radio 2 on September 27th.

Last night, things got kicked up a notch courtesy of a Mr Liam Gallagher

Taking to the same massive stage erected outside the capital’s gates, the former Oasis frontman stunned yet another packed audience (this time mostly standing) for a high-octane night of anthems.

In proper Gallagher fashion, the rockstar’s set kicked off with a recording of Manchester City players’ celebratory Campeones chant in the dressing room from the last season. And in proper Gallagher audience fashion, chants of “Noel!” (the other Gallagher brother who has been involved in many a public squabble with Liam) could be heard across the Granaries.

Champagne Supernova, Cigarettes n Alcohol… the hits were all here, and while not everyone was entirely happy with the night, judging by the dozens of photos and videos that have already emerged, it was definitely yet another one for the history books.

The night also saw local favourites Ira Losco and Matthew James warm the crowd up as the sun set on another beautiful summer day.

But as expected, it was the universally loved and immortal Wonderwall that stole the show

It’s been over two decades of the global hit making it to every pub or sporting event around the world, so Liam gave the thousands-strong audience a chance to belt out Wonderwall’s chorus themselves in what quickly became an emotional Floriana-sized choir.

Thanks to XFM’s very own Oz, everyone who was there on the night could relive the magic moment… and everyone else could get an intense dose of FOMO.

If you missed this week’s two massive events, don’t despair!

Summer in Malta is chock-full of big concerts and fully-fledged festivals, and Visit Malta aren’t quite done with their own set of big nights either.

Next up on the Malta Shows calendar is Summerdaze, promising a massive line-up that includes the likes of Tyga, David Guetta, Green Velvet, Paul Kalkbrenner James Arthur, Martinez Brothers and Christian ‘Bobo’ Vieri… yes, that guy.

Tag someone who would’ve loved to be there this week… and someone who needs to check the coming events!
