An impromptu street party was held in the driveway of the Planning Authority’s offices last night, as a protest camp over its fuel station policies drew to a close.

With a DJ booth set up right outside the PA’s gates, a handful of activists danced under the moonlight, careful not to knock over the tents that had been erected along the driveway.

The Moviment Graffitti activists have been camping outside the PA’s Floriana offices since Thursday morning to protest at how long the authority is taking to update a controversial policy which allows the relocation of fuel stations from town centre to land outside development zones as well as the construction of entirely new fuel stations on ODZ land.

In January 2018, the Environment and Resources Authority (ERA) proposed an end to all fuel station applications in ODZ land, but this was shot down by the PA a few months later.

In a meeting with activists on Friday, Transport Minister Ian Borg and Environment Minister José Herrera pledged that a review of the policy will be tabled in the coming weeks and that it would satisfy most of the activists’ demands.
