The recent wave of power cuts in Malta hit several parts of the country, taking a toll on local businesses, especially those dependent on the supply of electricity for preservation of their products.

A recent case is Karl Sacco, a health shop owner in Zurrieq, who took it to Facebook to inform customers that they are giving away defrosted food items for €2 due to the power cut.

Sacco runs “The Healthy Pantry”, a store that offers a variety of health foods, including frozen vegan items.

After being without electricity for 12 hours, his freezers defrosted, putting his stock at risk. But instead of letting his items go to waste, Sacco posted on Facebook, offering the vegan items at reduced prices to anyone interested.

The health shop owner decided to sell them for €2 each, trying to salvage what he could from the unexpected incident.

Another night of power cuts, with temperatures soaring into the 40s and the electrical grid being unable to meet the high demand.

According to the power outage map on the Enemalta website, parts of Siġġiewi, Luqa, Żebbug, Qormi, Qrendi, Safi, Żurrieq, Qala, and Għajnsielem in Gozo were all without power.

Social media platforms were flooded with complaints and criticisms directed towards the authorities in charge of the situation.

Enemalta issued a statement on their Facebook page shortly after 7 am, stating that their technical and customer response teams attended to nine high voltage network faults that affected customers in various localities.

While they managed to restore electricity supply to many customers during the night, some areas required extensive repairs and were still experiencing outages.

“More than 50 employees are working throughout the night to help customers affected by these difficulties. We are allocating additional resources to complete the required repairs as soon as possible.”

“Where technically possible, electricity supply is being restored through alternative network connections. In other zones, supply will be restored as soon as repairs are completed.”

Mainly Żurrieq, Naxxar and Żebbuġ, required extensive repairs. Enemalta stated that they were working diligently to reconnect these areas as soon as possible. They also noted that electricity supply had already been restored in some regions affected earlier.

As power cuts continue to disrupt businesses and everyday life in Malta, cases like Sacco’s highlight the human cost of such infrastructural challenges.
