They Blew Her Up: Production Delving Into Daphne Caruana Galizia Assassination Back With Extra Shows

The locally produced play that goes straight into the heart of the assassination of Daphne Caruana Galizia is back with a number of extra shows.

Next week, on 16th October, will mark five years since the brutal assassination of investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia.

The production, They Blew Her Up, delves right into the assassination of Caruana Galizia and the political earthquake it unleashed.

Originally co-produced with Spazju Kreattiv, They Blew Her Up has been staged in Malta, Belgium and most recently in Italy and has also won Production of the Year at this year’s Arts Council’s Premju għal-arti.

The play explores the multi-pronged political, cultural and social indiscretions that essentially provided Caruana Galicia with enough fodder for her famous blog Running Commentary, aptly titled as it was a gushing source that could never rub dry, that is until someone decided to close the tap by silencing her forever.

They Blew Her Up is structured around five characters that individually investigate different viewpoints surrounding Caruana Galicia, whether sympathetic or unsympathetic and which audiences are invited to evaluate to arrive at their own educated conclusions.

These include the character of Daphne’s son, a journalist, a police investigator and two other characters which are left deliberately mysterious as the case is still ongoing, namely the ‘criminal element’  and a ‘source’.

Scriptwriter and journalist Herman Grech managed to gain access to some of the main players in the field to stage a gripping and hard-hitting one-act play.

“I see a lot of crossover between journalism and theatre, and I’ve been lucky that I’ve had a passion for both for several years. Both journalism and playwriting evoke a social and political response from their audiences. With theatre, you have the privilege of having a captive audience, shorn of digital distractions,” Grech explained.

“Through this play, I wanted to push forward the importance of journalism as the so-called fourth estate, and the risks that journalists take when the institutions fail us.”

They Blew Her Up is being produced by FM Theatre Productions at Theatre Next Door. All 5 shows are now sold out. However, an extra show has been added on Tuesday 11th October at 8pm.
