Rap Battles, Pop-Up Dinners, And Parties Galore: 7 Events Happening In Malta This Week

July is as busy as they get, and this weekend is perfect proof of that. With dozens of things all happening at the same time, tiny Malta will yet again be swept in a flurry of events.

And if you’re not quite sure where to start, here are seven events that can help you decide.

Friday 13th (don’t worry) July

1. A pop-up dinner to satisfy al your truffle desires

Truffle honey, truffle ice-cream, truffle tapenade… it’s all coming to Valletta’s Camarata thanks to BAKED’s Fran Farrugia.

Along with Christian Musu from Truffles & Co, Fran is bringing a never-before-seen (and tasted) truffle-centric menu for two days straight. Guaranteed #FoodPorn material right here.

2. One of the alternative scene’s biggest heavyweights celebrate 10 years of noise

The Areola Treat are one of those bands that take local alternative music fans back to the heydays of the scene… that is, just last decade.

A whole 10 years after releasing their first EP, The Areola Treat will be bringing back some of their most beloved tracks to the live music circuit. Expect a good old mosh pit and bring your best ear plugs.

3. A generous helping of electronic music

Indie. Electro. Manoel Island.

If you love the sound of those four words, then The Funky Monkey is definitely the place to be this weekend.

Friday will see three shakers and movers from the scene – I.YOU, Shutter (Chris Goa) and F.87 take to the decks for one long night of dancing classics.

Saturday 14th July

4. An evening of beautifully diverse cuisine

Tunisian, Moroccan, Libyan and Ethiopian. If you’ve ever wanted to dive into these glorious ethnic cuisines, now is your perfect chance to do so. And the best part is, they’re all going to be in one place.

Malta’s Migrant Women Association has teamed up with the Ta’ Xbiex Local Council to bring you the fourth edition of Connecting Through Culture, and it’s all going down this Saturday from 6pm onwards at the Ta’ Xbiex Yacht Marina.

5. A fully-fledged rap battle tournament

In case you haven’t realised yet, Malta’s currently going through an intensive rap and hip hop phase. And bringing it all home is Botta u Risposta, the island’s biggest rap battle event.

Returning for a third year, this year’s edition sees five local rappers battling it out, along with three other hip hop artists performing on the night.

Needless to say; things are about to get hella lit.

6. A night entirely dedicated to French electro

On the day of the Bastille and barely 24 hours before Les Bleus take on Croatia at the World Cup Finals, the perfectly-timed Vive La France will be returning for a second edition, this time at The Funky Monkey.

Electronic music has a lot to thank France for, and this night will set out to remind everyone about just how many great artists came out of the hexagon. Dancing shoes obligatory, baguette optional.

Sunday 15th July

7. A festival all about games kicks off in Valletta

Yes, you read that right!

Kicking off the Mediterranean Gaming Week this Sunday will be a Games Festival celebrating everything from board games and card games to role-playing and online gaming.

The full schedule is available here, but expect Sunday’s launch party to things off the right way in the capital.

BONUS: The 2018 World Cup Final

Sure, England aren’t there (and Italy never even had a chance to begin with) but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be excited for the end of what has shaped up to be a thrilling World Cup.

France take on Croatia in the first match-up of its kind. One team can finally win its second World Cup, and the other has never been this far. Expect drama, and rest assured that every building with a TV set will be showing it.
