Sandesha Shetty, a 31-year-old Indian man, has been remanded in custody after being charged with raping his 23-year-old Maltese co-worker while working in an elderly home and holding her against her will.

The incident occurred while the victim was cleaning a room within the home last Sunday morning. The victim told police that at around 10am, Shetty had entered the room she was in and grabbed her from behind, proceeding to penetrate and rape her.

After around one minute, Shetty reportedly stopped and went to make a sandwich, before returning to continue

However, people had since entered the room where the rape had occurred, so he was unable to continue.

The victim called her boyfriend and made a police report following the incident; she then submitted to a medical examination which was able to confirm that a rape had taken place.

Aside from the rape itself, Shetty is also being accused of sharing sexually explicit content with his victim, as well as passing inappropriate comments in the weeks prior to the attack.

Presiding Magistrate Monica Vella ordered the names of the victim and the elderly home not to be published.

Dr Franco Debono and Dr Amadeus Cachia, who are representing Shetty, did not request bail for the accused.
