Reddit Is Trying To Save A Maltese Man Who Is Stuck In A Psychiatric Hospital In Honduras
People on the internet are teaming up to help translate the messages of an apparently Maltese man who is inside a psychiatric hospital in Honduras after allegedly having all his belongings stolen.
In a post on Reddit’s r/Malta, a user said that a family member had contacted them in an attempt to get this Maltese man freed.
“Hey everyone,” the poster, habshabshabs, begins. “À family member of mine works at a psychiatric hospital in Honduras. About a month ago somebody with Maltese nationality was dropped off by the immigration authorities at this hospital. He has been stuck here ever since. Apparently, all his ID and belongings were stolen, he speaks English with a noticeable Maltese accent. He appears to be in ok psychological shape, and the only real reason he’s there is because nobody knows what to do with him.”
“What else can we do to get this guy back? I have no idea what his story is but him being in this hospital is not good for anybody.”
People immediately asked for a picture of the man, and more details quickly emerged
According to the original poster, the man’s name is James Mangion, and he is currently in Hospital Psiquiatrico Mario Mendoza in Tegucigalpa, Honduras’ capital city.
A recording of James was posted to Reddit after he was apparently able to send a voice message through a Honduran doctor’s personal Facebook account.
In the message, which you can find here, he asks for someone to speak to the doctor for him.
“This is the doctor’s Facebook, I can’t enter into my Facebook. Can you speak a bit to the doctor please?” James says in the recording, before mentioning the names of some of his loved ones.
One Maltese Redditor wondered how any Maltese person could ever forget their ID number
“As a Maltese citizen, it is weird the guy doesn’t know his ID number for one, because you use it for, like, every exam, form, calling any customer care centre etc. It’s etched into your brain so it’s strange that he says doesn’t know it.. but still, we need to get someone high enough (power-wise not drug wise) to help him back,” they said.
Another Maltese commentator took the opportunity to make a snide comment:
“Inform Konrad Mizzi, he will send a plane to get him… Literally not joking this is a serious matter.”
Lovin Malta attempted to contact Hospital Psiquiatrico Mario Mendoza but received no response. A Maltese government spokesperson told Lovin Malta that authorities will be verifying the case to see whether action needs to be taken.
