Reggae Legends Inner Circle And Third World Could Be Looking For A Maltese Guide Ahead Of Their Performance

 

June is set to be a great month for music lovers here in Malta, and a particularly good one if you happen to be a fan of reggae music. Legendary reggae groups Third World and Inner Circle are teaming up for a mega concert on the 14th of June.

Both bands have been around for ages and have some mega-illustrious careers under their belts. Ahead of their Malta concert later this month, Lovin Malta caught up with Inner Circle and Third World to talk about everything from timeless concerts to Maltese food

This will be the first time that both Inner Circle and Third World are visiting Malta

And all band members are pretty excited to check out our heritage and all the historical sites, but Third World members did mention that they were extra excited to feast on some Mediterranean seafood.

“From your geological location I’m sure there are a lot of historical sites we would love to visit,” noted Inner Circle keyboardist Bernard ‘Touter’ Harvey. “Yes, we could do the tourist thing, but there’s nothing like seeing a place with a native who’s knowledgeable.”

“Like a tree, Reggae has many branches… there is a style for everyone”

Inner Circle and Third World are often referred to as pioneers of reggae, having influenced the evolution of the sound of reggae over the years. And both of them have been producing songs for several years.

But how has reggae changed since they first started making music?

“A lot of the music that both Third World and Inner Circle performs was created 20 plus years ago, but it’s still relevant today. The changes that have occurred throughout the years has moved the music from the island of Jamaica to the world.”

“We come from an analogue world that changed into a digital world.” Members of Third World noted that, despite the constant evolution of music, drum and bass remain at the centre of reggae. And this keeps the music rooted in a somewhat familiar place.

Easily the most popular song to come from Inner Circle is Sweat (A La La La Long)

They believe that the reason it’s so popular is, simply put, because it’s “song about life with a catchy melody.” We’d have to agree.

The song Now That We Found Love from Third World is still their most requested song to date

“We recorded that song in 1978,” the band reminisce. “The song was written by Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff and originally recorded as a ballad by The Ojays. We then created our own uptempo version that Kenny Gamble said ‘gave the song a passport’ – it was a number one hit all over the world. And today, there is not one live show that we aren’t requested to perform NTWFL!”

In the 90s, rapper and producer Heavy D picked up NTWFL and decided to release his own rap version of the song. Fast forward to 2018, and the worldwide global clothing manufacturer The Gap invited Leon Bridges to rerecord the song, and they used the song for their holiday marketing campaign.

“It’s a really incredible thing to watch a song like that take a 40-year plus journey with us!” the band said. “Decade after decade, reaching different generations. It truly is amazing.”

Ahead of their big concert on the 14th of June, Third World and Inner Circle only have one message to pass on to their fans

“Come prepared to have fun, we love a lively atmosphere,” they smiled. “Let’s party together – one love!”
