A new groundbreaking report titled “Victims of Malta’s Construction Boom: The Fatal Wait For Accountability,” casts a spotlight on the human cost of Malta’s booming construction industry.

The new (PILN) the Public Interest Litigation Network, report, by the The Daphne Caruana Galizia Foundation,  provides an examination of related injuries, deaths, and the subsequent justice processes that unfolded between 2010 to 2022.

Since 2016, Malta has seen a sharp increase in approved development permits, doubling the number in the years prior. The resulting boom in construction has had a profound effect on the landscape and citizens of Malta and Gozo.

Malta’s construction industry is by far the deadliest sector to work in, with 90% of work-related deaths happening on construction sites. However, as this new report indicates, the true cost of this industry boom may be far more tragic than anticipated.

The Foundation, through the PILN project, started investigating construction site fatalities in 2022, noting an alarming trend in the lack of accountability for construction-related fatalities.

The death of 20-year-old Jean Paul Sofia in a building collapse in Corradino only underscored the urgency of this investigation.
