7 Signs A Maltese Person Doesn’t Really Like You

When making new friends paranoia can kick in and convince you that everyone secretly hates you and is only pretending to be your friend. While this is almost certainly not the case, it’s also good to make sure you know when you’re wanted and when you’re simply not as close as you think you are.

If you tick off one or two of these, that’s totally fine – but if you find yourself close to the six/seven mark, it’s time for some soul searching.

1. They’re weirdly punctual

Maltese people are always late, so if you agree to meet from 1:00pm till 3:00pm and they’re off as soon as it’s five-to, you’ve got a problem. We’re not known to be punctual so keep an eye out for people who keep leaving perfectly on time.

2. You’re not on first-name basis with their family

Do you only know their family members as ‘your mother’ or ‘your sister’? If you answered yes, then we’ve got some bad news. Not knowing a Maltese person’s family tree inside out within the first three months of friendship means you’re clearly not as close as you think.

3. They don’t touch you every 15 seconds

Maltese people cannot have a conversation without using their hands. They also cannot explain anything without touching you in some way. If you’ve spoken to a Maltese person for more than five minutes and they haven’t pinched, squeezed, grabbed or brushed you then it’s likely you’re not in their best books.

4. You meet someone after saying ‘sellili’ and they wouldn’t have heard about it

You’ve ended a lovely chat at the supermarket with an old friend and they’ve started to walk away. You turn and over your shoulder call out: SELLILI! They promise they will.

The next time you meet a family member that you specifically asked the above-mentioned friend to say hi to, you find out they haven’t. Did they simply forget, or have they broken the Maltese friendship code because in reality they are not your friend. The hurt is too great to process right now.

5. They won’t share food with you

This is less of a ‘new friends’ test and more of a ‘are we really BFFLs or is it in my head’ confirmation. Maltese people love food, so if they’re only willing to give some to people they really like.

6. And they don’t have any recommendations for restaurants

We’re more than just food lovers, we’re opinionated food lovers. If they can’t think of at least one place you should try, they probably don’t want you to go to their favourite haunt. Awkward.

7. They never criticise you

Maltese people love to pass comments about everything, but we’re also too lazy to keep up an argument for too long. This means if we go out of our way to tell someone we don’t like an outfit or we think their hair looks terrible, it’s because they’re a friend and worth the effort.

If you never hear anything bad about yourself from a Maltese person, they’re probably saying it to someone else who’ll just agree with them and move on.

So, how many of these does the person you’re thinking of tick off? Let us know in the comments on Facebook
