Sweets From Our Maltese Childhood That We’re Still Craving
There’s nothing that can fling you into a flashback moment like tasting something from your past. Growing up in Malta guarantees some pretty sweet memories, but none as literal as the treats we enjoyed all those years ago.
Here’s some of our favourite sweets from yesteryear.
1. Popping Candy
We can all agree to remembering the universal blend of fear and excitement that overcame anyone who ate a mouthful of this explosive candy.
2. Candy Necklaces
So many teeth lost on these wearable sweets.
3. Fruit Salad
There was no fruit involved here, just really sugary, chewy stuff.
4. Coca Cola Bottles
These were so good that they withstood the test of time. You can still get these juicy, cokey, gems from basically any food shop in Malta. #SmallBlessings
5. Pez
There was just something about an oblong sweet popping out of a cartoon character’s throat that just made us smile.
6. Flying Saucers
Love them or hate them, these pastel-coloured disks provide instant time-travel back to our youth!
7. Pic-Nic
There’s nothing that isn’t right with the world when you’re dunking breadsticks into soft hazelnut, chocolate.
8. Opal Fruits
Enter the P Diddy of sweets – we never quite knew why they changed name, but it didn’t make us love them any less.
9. Candy Cigarettes
Back when smoking was considered a rite of passage into adulthood (i.e. before we all realised there’s nothing good about cigarettes) we all felt super grown up pretending to puff on these sugar sticks.
10. Slice tal-Ġelat
Thin wafers covering a big slab of ice cream – what’s not to love?
11. 1c Bubblegum Malta
There’s no purer joy than finding that last one cent in your winter jacket and running to the nearest confectioner to get your daily sugar fix.
12. Love Hearts
Way before we knew what love was and how it could destroy our lives, we blissfully sucked away on it’s sweetness until we felt nauseous from the sugar rush. Love hearts were an endless source of fun. Well, at least until you were handed the ‘Just Friends’ heart.
