‘Transcending Partisanship’: Lawyers4Choice Malta Launched As Pro-Choice Lobby Grows

Malta’s pro-choice lobby has welcomed another constituent member, with the launch of Lawyers4Choice, an online community championing reproductive justice and comprehensive sexual health.

The founding members of Lawyers4Choice (L4C) are Emma Portelli Bonnici, Jenny Orlando-Salling, and Desiree Attard, lawyers who all come from diverse political backgrounds.

“This is reflective of the fact that while the matter of reproductive rights and access to safe and legal abortion is deeply political in nature, it must necessarily transcend partisanship,” Portelli Bonnici told Lovin Malta.

The trio believes that by working together and utilising their collective knowledge and skills, they can create a more just and equitable society for all, recognising the matter of abortion is not a partisan one but a human right.

The community is comprised of a collective of legal professionals who are deeply invested in the principle that access to safe and legal abortion, as well as comprehensive sexual education, are fundamental human rights.

Asked for a comprehensive list of member names, the group has chosen not to publish any identifying information so far, in order to preserve their privacy and provide a safe space for lawyers to “engage with the sensitivity and often stigmatized topic of abortion”.

“L4C community also comprises a diverse array of other members, many of whom are comfortable with their names being made public. However, there are also members who prefer to remain anonymous, thus, at this juncture, the community has chosen to not publish a comprehensive list of member names and other identifying information,” Portelli Bonnici continued.

“Additionally, this serves as a starting point for addressing the ongoing stigma that surrounds the conversation on abortion and reproductive rights in Malta.”
