Trump 2.0? US Unveils Bill Giving President Biden Power To Ban TikTok

A proposed law in the US looks to give President Joe Biden more powers to ban foreign-based technologies should they pose a national threat, including Chinese-owned global sensation app TikTok.

This is the latest attempt in Congress to pose a threat to the app’s future in the United States.

The legislation, called the Restricting the Emergence of Security Threats that Risk Information and Communications Technology (RESTRICT) Act, does not specifically target TikTok for a ban but can give the government new tools to block any foreign-linked producers of software that they deem to be a security risk.

These tougher measures address the fear that TikTok, which is largely owned by the Chinese government, could be forced to hand over data on US users.

However, TikTok CEO Shou Chew said that the company has never received such a request and would not comply should China make one. The company has even taken voluntary steps to separate US data from the rest of the global corporation, hosting that data on a server by US tech giant Oracle.

Still, this hasn’t stopped a dozen senators from proposing tougher measures that could affect the US’s 100 million TikTok users.

What do you think of these measures?
