7 Week-Long Challenges Maltese People Can Take To Better Themselves

Article Featured Image

You may not have managed to stick with your New Year’s Resolutions, and February was a tough month. But why not make next week the week you start bettering yourself with a fun, easy challenge. Since it’s easier to keep motivated when others are doing it with you, why not post which challenge you’re doing in the comments or on Lovin’s community page to get as much support as you can?

1. Swap out all series for documentaries

Despite not having many good local TV shows to choose from, Maltese people are addicted to TV series. If you’re looking to try an easy, but educational challenge, swap out all your fictional series for a good documentary. From Paris is Burning to Planet Earth II there’s so much information out there waiting to be learned.

2. Read two books

Keep one in your bag and one by the toilet. Instead of reaching for your phone to refresh your Instagram feed for the 100th time, read a chapter. By the end of the week you’d have easily powered through two books. If you want to make the challenge more fun, make at least one of the books Maltese.

It’ll also be a good catalyst to get you back into reading if you’ve been more phone-focused lately. You won’t keep up the two-a-week pace, but it’s a good baptism of fire.

3. Go vegetarian

Or if you’re feeling extra brave: vegan! Team Lovin is currently doing vegan/vegetarian week and it’s proving to be an amazing experience. Even if you don’t stick with it after the week is over, it’ll be a good way to help you appreciate what you’re eating, cut down on excessive meat consumption and learn clever ways to circumnavigate food restrictions.

But seriously, in for a penny, in for a pound. If you can survive the first week the idea of continuing it after that gets so much easier.

4. Start every morning with yoga

Malta has a serious issue with stress and anxiety. Between our cultural mentality, lack of open spaces and endless traffic, we need all the stress-relief we can get.

If you wake up just 15 minutes earlier than you would normally you could turn your whole day around. Whatever your level of fitness find a simple yoga video that works for you and start each day of the week with a good stretch. Your mind and body will thank you.

5. Donate one item of clothing a day

You know that top you bought that you swore you’d wear as soon as Malta’s windy winter died down but just before the summer sun kicked in? Yes, the one you absolutely never wear. Donate it. There’s loads of organisations across the island that could use the help.

Every day, instead of hovering over it and pretending that one magical day you’ll wear it, take it out of your wardrobe and put it in a basket. Repeat this every day. You’ll be de-cluttering, making way for new items you’ll use and helping out people who definitely need it more than you.

6. Leave your car behind

This one may seem impossible for Malta, but how many of us are guilty of saying the transport system is shit, despite not having ridden a bus for over five years? How many of us complain about traffic without realising we’re the problem too?

If you plan your routes well and ahead of time, going car-free isn’t impossible. And while it won’t all be sunshine and roses, it will help you identify routes you can get the bus to, or walk to, in future and arrive much quicker than if you drove.

7. Reach out to an old friend every day

Scroll through your contacts once before bed. If a name jumps out at you, text them. Don’t promise coffee-catchups you’ll never follow up on or focus on how awkwardly long it’s been since you spoke. Just reach out to them, tell them you were thinking about them and ask how their life has been.

Reconnecting with old friends from Secondary, Sixth Form or even University can brighten your day and theirs so easily.
