Teatru Malta has marked this year’s World Theatre Day with a truly exciting announcement, launching their Spring/Summer 2025 programme just after the final, sold-out performance of 1881.

This new season promises an exciting mix of bold, tender, and distinctly Maltese productions, a true celebration of the creative reinvention that defines the theatre world.

Artistic Director Sean Buhagiar highlights the behind-the-scenes magic that makes theatre come alive, saying, “Theatre isn’t just what happens in the spotlight. It’s the whole ecosystem, the scaffolding, the duct tape, the caffeine. With the resources we have, our team works wonders.”

The programme reflects Teatru Malta’s dedication to showcasing diverse voices and perspectives, from the engaging Miti Miti for young audiences to the ambitious 1881.

This season also sees the return of Repubblikgħana, now reimagined to bring music, memory, and politics into the classroom, as well as Boċċi: The Musical, which breathes new life into a traditional Maltese sport. DRAGO: It-Tvenvin ta’ Tornado Tony, an ode to Malta’s snooker legend, will also embark on an international tour following its success at home.

In schools, OħXON opens up vital discussions on body image and self-worth, while the biting satire Il-Ġaħan ta’ Binġemma returns to Fort St. Elmo in a landmark revival, coinciding with the playwright’s 100th birthday.

Teatru Malta continues its commitment to grassroots storytelling with initiatives like Trikki Trakki, Każin 60+, and Studio Francis Ebejer, all grounded in Maltese culture and intergenerational voices.

Expanding beyond Malta, Teatru Malta’s international reach is growing. Through the Drama of Smaller European Languages initiative, Maltese stories are finding audiences on foreign stages, with Miti Miti already making waves in Europe.

More adventures abroad are on the horizon, promising to bring Teatru Malta’s creativity to new corners of the world.
