‘Europe Is Ready To Play Its Part’: Roberta Metsola Meets Authorities In Egypt Over Peace Process
EP President Roberta Metsola told President of Egypt Abdel Fatah El-Sisi that Europe is “ready to play its part in promoting dialogue and peace in the region, [whilst] addressing common challenges in the Mediterranean.”
“The EU and Egypt are close partners, linked by history and geography.” Metsola said during a meeting at the Egyptian Presidential Palace in Cairo.
“My visit comes at a very sensitive time in a region that is severely affected by wars and conflicts. During my meetings with the country’s authorities, I underlined that we will continue to work together to promote stability, prosperity and peace in the region.”
Metsola said that the European Parliament recognises Egypt’s key constructive role in these challenging times throughout the region and commended Egypt’s diplomatic efforts towards stability in the region and towards the reinvigoration of the Middle East Peace Process.
The EP President also met with the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Emigration Badr Abdelatty, the President of the Egyptian Senate, Abdel Wahab Razeq, and the Speaker of the Egyptian House of Representatives, Hanafy Ali El Gebali during her visit.
Alongside this Metsola discussed migration flows and asylum, as well as recent developments in Syria.
